GLANZMANS 'LETS OTHERS LIGHT THEIR CANDLES' IN WELLSVILLE
By MATT MULLER / Alfred Sun Reporter

Since Andy Glanzman of Wellsville, and his wife, Tina, have been in the candle making business for more than a quarter of a century, they are probably familiar with many notable statements made invoking their product by now. Take, for instance, the admonition of feminist writer and intellectual, Margaret Fuller, 1810-1840, "If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it."

Since 1978 the success and rapid growth of the Glanzman company, Northern Lights Candles, has both benefited the local economy and developed the creative abilities of many employers. Taking Fuller's statement even further to heart, now the Glanzmans are the founders of the Wellsville Creative Arts Center. It will provide the knowledge and space for all area residents to light the candles of their own creativity and appreciate that of others.

Alfred resident Marshall Green, who come with experience in ceramics and the cultural arts, is the Executive Director of the Center. It will include more than 13 faculty members, drawn from the ready pool of accomplished people in this region.

As have some members of the Center's faculty, Green himself has studied at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Some of his work may be seen at the Canacadea Country Store in Alfred Station.

The facility will be occupying a variety of specially equipped rooms in two adjoining former store buildings. Classes to be offered include ceramics, painting, drawing and cooking. Students will have access to electric kilns, studios, stoves and, yes, the kitchen sink. The Arts Center Supply Store will serve both enrolled students and the community.

Class fees and materials will be moderately priced, with discounts for members of the Center. Offerings will be aimed at different groups within the community, such as daytime ones for seniors aged 65 and older.

The Center also includes space for banquets, meetings, receptions, recitals or other group functions. All live events offered by the Center, such as coffee houses, will be family friendly.

The Center is located at 124 Northern Min Street in Wellsville, and everyone is invited to its public grand opening from 9am - 6pm Saturday, Sept. 9th. Class registration will take place on opening day, as well as on Sept. 11 and 12, from 2pm-8pm. Online pre-registration is also available now and anytime before a class start date.
