Believe it or not, when Farmer Jason recorded A Day at the Farm with Farmer Jason, he had no intention of becoming an internationally renowned children’s recording artist. Unlike his twin brother, alt-country legend Jason Ringenberg, Farmer Jason had no desire to be under fame’s glaring spotlight. He was perfectly happy living and working on his Tennessee farm with his family and menagerie of farm critters. That all changed one fine autumn day when he decided to drive into town and buy a pony at the horse auction. He figured his whole family would enjoy riding and caring for a nice gentle pony so he inquired from one of the horse traders where he could purchase such an animal. The rather shady looking character led Farmer Jason to a darkened corner of the corral and offered him a great deal on a sedated-looking pony named “The Soul of Serenity.” Farmer Jason, being the trusting soul that he is, bought The Soul of Serenity on the spot and took it home. As he drove off the dealer did a jig around the corral, then headed straight to the nearest tavern, money in hand! Little did Farmer Jason know, but his new pony was not named “The
Soul of Serenity” at all. Its real name was “El Loco Diablo”
and it was rumored that he had once killed a man in Alberta, Canada!
Farmer Jason hopped on his back expecting to take a nice easy ride and
that pony took off bucking and racing down the lane. Now it just so
happened that two of Nashville’s finest musicians, George Bradfute
and Fats Kaplin, were sitting on a neighbor’s porch jamming on
some bluegrass tunes when El Loco Diablo raced past with Farmer Jason
holding on for dear life hollering “WHOOOOAAAAA THERE PONY!!!”
George and Fats thought Farmer Jason was singing a song so they joined
in on banjo and guitar. You’ll never guess what happened next:
El Loco Diablo stopped bucking and started trotting gently in perfect
time with Fats Kaplin’s banjo. After this miraculous event, Farmer
Jason decided that it would be a capital idea to write and record an
entire CD of songs about his farm and animals. |
